Today was H.E.R. Concert’s FIRST official bake sale at Kendall Campus, and let me tell you…what a success it was! We were able to get donations from Offerdahl’s Cafe and Publix, and we were able to raise $350 towards our goal of $20,000!

We are THAT much closer to transforming the lives of the Congolese people. Also, if you haven’t done so already…visit our fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/HERConcertforCongo! If you would like to make your own page, go to herconcert.com for more details (check out the ‘Fundraise’ tab!) When we tally up all of donations from HER Concert fundraisers, we have raised a little under $1500!

This is AMAZING; our page hasn’t even been up for more than two weeks! For all of you helping us out, THANK YOU! We truly appreciate it.

Another reminder: tomorrow is another MANDATORY Volunteer Training Session at Kendall Campus at 5pm in Rm 2108! I hope to see all of you there!

50 DAYS AND COUNTING UNTIL THE CONCERT!

Today was Kendall Campus’ Honors College Colloquium that was centered around the situation taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo. And I have to say that it went extremely well! We did have a couple of technical difficulties with the video (sorry, Steph!) but besides that, Judy’s presentation was amazing.

For those of you who don’t know or didn’t go to our colloquium, Judy Anderson is the executive director of HEAL Africa. She is an exceptional woman, who was born in Congo, and has dedicated her life to helping others. She spoke today about different women’s accounts, what HEAL Africa is doing, and how the minerals in our cellphones and computers effect the lives of people across the Atlantic Ocean in Africa. I know I was truly inspired, and I hope those of you in attendance were too!

One of our team members, Julian Gomez, was able to tape it, so a quick synopsis video should be available soon (thanks again, Julian)! Also, the Honors College very own rapper, M-Step, was able to make an appearance today and performed his new song “Heal to the Empower to the Rebuild.”

After, we had a quick little meeting with new people interested in our cause, and I can truly say that I am looking forward to working with this amazing team for the next couple of months. We have a daunting task ahead of us, but if we all remember what we are working for, we can get it done, and get it done beautifully!

Thanks again, and thanks for the follow,

I am a little random and always thinking positive. As talked about last night with Emily, I have designated myself the motivation for this association. We can do this, and exceed all the expectations that we ourselves have for this project. There will be moments that we will be overwhelmed but that will not matter, our deisre to make this a successful event will overpower all self doubt and those FUGLY people that doubt us. I look forward to working with all of you.
It’s been awhile, but we are back and ready to go! The meeting with the Kendall kiddies went fantastic yesterday and the main thing we spoke about was getting the word out there.

So for those of you lovely peeps reading this post, it’s time to open a new tab, go to Facebook and like facebook.com/HERConcert! Spread the news to your friends, get them to like it, and post it all over your walls! And for you Twitter lovers make sure to follow us at @HERConcert2012.

In other news, be expecting some posts for the other wonderful SAID campus
presidents. Get ready for Claudia de la Cruz (InterAmerican Campus) who is one of the sweetest girls I’ve met. She loves Peace Love World, Zara, and her new butterfly scarf! Can’t wait for you all to get to know her better. There’s Marc Overton (North Campus) who is also equally awesome, our representative male leader (haha), and loves Ron from Harry Potter (I think?…he played him in a skit for the Honors College!) And last but certainly not least, Sarah Gamundi (Wolfson Campus), our representative freshmen president, who is super sweet and extremely passionate about the cause!

I know you all will love them just as much as I do. Also make sure to check out our NEW WEBSITE (courtesy of Geoffrey Fletcher…wassaaaap!) herconcert.com. Enjoy!

So we’ve made our first step to get Cris Cab to play H.E.R. Concert for Congo! Just sent out three emails to his publicist, his agent, and his management — hopefully one of them answer…or ALL! If not, get ready to start sending out a lot of emails!

We will keep you posted on any news on a reply! Keep your fingers crossed: he really is one of our top choices to play the concert. He’s got a positive message and an AMAZING sound! I’ll post up a video of his new cover of Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks soon.

My. Gosh.

Hello again,

Okay, so it’s me (Emily) again! I just wanted to update you on what’s going on since it’s been a week or so…

Let me start off by saying that, the group of people that has been assembled is truly amazing. I thought I was inspired before, but after seeing everyone these last couple of days come together, I am in awe. With each and every meeting, my smiles get bigger! I honestly believe that all of us can make such a difference. Each and every person has something to offer this project, and I am convinced that we can help transform lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As for the status of HER Concert, as Beatriz said “LET’S GET THIS BALL ROLLING.” We have finished our donor packets (potential corporate sponsors we’re comin’ for you!). We are working on a formal website (thank you, BIANCA and Geoffrey). The media packet is in the works, and leaders are clearly emerging. AND, last but not least, the official logo should be done by next week—so keep an eye out for that!

Again, thanks for following. Thanks for being interested. Thanks for being awesome, and thanks for being you!

After a very relaxing summer, all of us have come back to school excited and ready to go! H.E.R. Concert for Congo (H.E.R. stands for heal, empower, rebuild) has been officially approved by the Miami-Dade College Kendal Campus administration! Our first meeting for our concert is this upcoming Monday (8/29/11) and Steph, Beatriz, and I are pumped!

Also, I’m going to get them to write a post soon because I want you all to meet them (they are the BEST). I’m also going to try to convince Stuart (our beyond awesome club advisor) to write a post. I’m sure you’re all ready to here from someone other than myself. And like I said before, I join all of you to come along on this crazy ride.

Until next time,

Hello lovely members of Tumblr,

We all want to change the world, right? Many of us roam the Earth wanting change, as well as wanting to be the change. Recently, a couple of my friends and I got together at this wonderful little restaurant in Miracle Mile, (yes, in the wonderful city of Miami) and came up with an idea. Our idea was to host a benefit concert at Miami-Dade College to raise funds for a charity in Africa, through an amazing club we are apart of called Students Aiding International Development, SAID for short.

My name is Emily and my best friends/co-coordinators in all of this are Stephanie and Beatriz. That night at Charlotte Bistro, we were accompanied by three of our older (…and wiser) friends, mentors, whatever you want to call them, Michelle, Diego, and Luisa. The most amazing thing about the trio is how they’ve inspired us to want to change the world; their project as change-makers was All-Nighter for Haiti, which was an event at the college that raised funds to build sustainable tilapia farms in Haiti!

As for our benefit concert, the charity we have decided to raise funds for is…drum roll please…HEAL Africa! HEAL Africa is a non-profit based out of Washington that has several programs set up to help better the lives of the war-torn Congolese. Our goal is $20,000 to build a safe house for rape survivors, a haven for women to talk to counselors and learn about HIV testing. With this money not only can we fund the construction of a safe house, but also put in place many critical programs and services, as well!

So there it is, welcome to our journey, our adventure, and our odyssey. Join us on this crazy ride and check back for updates. Be back as soon as I’ve got more news!

Check out www.healafrica.org for more details on the wonderfully awesome things the charity is doing in Congo!

Best,
